Perhaps you're interested in learning about how Unlikely Hero came into being.
If you’ve read the first book in the Hero series, Gold Medal Hero, you may remember that the main characters are Connor and Bailey. It wasn’t until I was nearing the end of writing Connor’s story that he - and I - learned that his coach’s wife Helen had left him and taken her daughter Kelly with her. Not only that, but it turned out that twelve-year-old Kelly hated the new arrangement and missed Jeff as much as he missed her.
Until then, I’d always believed that despite his wife’s lack of interest in rowing, Jeff’s marriage was reasonably solid.
I also had no idea that their daughter Kelly wasn’t his.
Of course, everyone in the rowing squad knew Kelly. They’d often seen her in the coach boat with Jeff while he taught her about coxing. They also knew father and daughter had a very close relationship, so it came as a huge shock to all when they heard that her mother had dragged her off to the city.
In order to explain this, it became obvious to me that Jeff’s story had to be the next one I wrote, and Lauren was the perfect support person for him. She’d already returned to Sherdon because of her dad being ill, she understood pre-teen kids due to being a teacher, and she also had her own issues. Surely they could help each other.
